Liberator

Liberator

Ref: X123

In stock

Counted cross stitch kit featuring the Consolidated B-24 Liberator, WW2 bomber/reconnaissance/maritime patrol aeroplane. It was built in larger numbers (18,482) than any other US aeroplane in World War II. Intended originally as a bomber, it was also suitable for deep ocean reconnaissance with radar, and was used in maritime patrol by RAF Coastal Command. With heavy armament and long range, Libertors helped the Allies to take and maintain control of the vital sea lanes, and played a major part in the American bombing offensive in Europe. They were more successful than the Flying Fortess in RAF service. The Liberator in our design is in the colours of the 458th Bomb Group based at Horsham St Faith (later to become Norwich Airport). 458th Group was one of the three groups which made up the 96th Bomb Wing, and comprised four squadrons - 752, 753, 754 abd 755. The 458th flew 240 missions, comprising 5,759 sorties, dropped 13,204 tons of bombs but lost 65 Liberators. Many who died are buried in the American Cemetery at Madingly near Cambridge.

The design contains only whole cross stitches - no part stitches - and some back stitches. The stitched measurements are 12.2" x 8"/31 cm x 20.5 cm.

It would fit a frame measuring 37.9 cm x 21.6 cm without mount, or 40.6 cm x 30.5 cm with mount. The standard fabric in the kit is 14 count white blockweave Aida. 28 count evenweave 100% Cashel linen is available as an option for £3 extra. The kit also contains DMC stranded cottons in 17 shades, ready-sorted on a thread organiser with the key, needle, easy-to-follow charts, small scale and large scale, full instructions for beginners and specific instructions for this kit.
